BusConnects has secured approval for a number of planning applications to improve multiple corridors within Dublin city. The applications form part of the programme to enhance 16 key bus routes.
BusConnects, a National Transport Authority programme, aims to improve public transport by creating an enhanced bus system that will better serve the city, its people, and the environment. Whilst there has been opposition in some corners to the plans, the creation of a more integrated public transport system has to be seen as a positive for the gridlocked city. The approved core bus corridor schemes will involve enhanced bus priority measures as well as improvements to infrastructure that will support pedestrians and cyclists.
The programme also elevates various aspects of the transport service through a series of initiatives. These include transitioning to a cashless payment system, upgrading the bus fleet to zero-emission vehicles, and enhancing the design and comfort of bus stops and shelters, along with other improvements.
Among the approved plans, the following routes are included:
-Lucan to City Centre
-Clongriffin to City Centre
-Tallaght / Clondalkin to City Centre
These corridors serve as primary access routes to Dublin city centre. The approved enhancements aim to boost their efficiency, enhance safety, and promote more sustainable modes of travel.
Once underway, construction on each corridor is expected to last around 24 months. The Lucan corridor will commence at N4 Junction 3, however the scheme was approved with an amendment, including the omission of the section beyond the Hermitage Golf Club. The Clongriffin corridor will commence from Mayne River Avenue, and the Tallaght/Clondalkin corridor will begin at the intersection of Old Blessington Road and Cookstown Way. Upon completion, all corridors will integrate with the existing traffic flow in Dublin’s city centre.
The overall improvements planned for the 16 routes are designed to work within the National Development Plan (2021-2030), the Transport Strategy for the Greater Dublin Area (2016-2035), the Climate Action Plan (2021) and the National Planning Framework 2040. Therefore, the implementation of the schemes will not only provide safer and more efficient travel but will help Dublin achieve further commitments within these strategies.
3D Design Bureau collaborated with the development team to deliver 3D planning solutions for the planning applications. A comprehensive range of verified view montages (VVMs) were produced for each of the routes, with visuals aligned to the final approved scope of works.
“It was an extremely challenging project to work on due to the accuracy required in illustrating exactly how the new routes will integrate with the existing surrounding environments and how proposed changes, outside of the bus lanes and road design, will be dealt with. Tight collaboration with the design team was essential, including the road engineers, to ensure levels and new road layouts were all accurately represented. The visuals our team produced were pivotal, offering An Bord Pleanála precise and thorough insights to assist in their decision making process.” Marcus Sestulis – Project & Operations Manager at 3D Design Bureau.
