Enabling works are now underway at the site of the new Tarbert Next Generation Power Station in County Kerry, following a final investment decision by SSE Thermal. Plans were granted by An Bord Pleanála in October 2024, following a detailed consultation period with local stakeholders. The project also holds a 10-year capacity agreement awarded in 2023.
3D Design Bureau supported the planning process by producing verified view montages to help illustrate the potential visual impact of the then-proposed Power Station within its surrounding environment, assisting with the local authority’s decision-making process.
The 300MW facility marks a significant milestone in Ireland’s energy transition, as the site evolves from its long-standing history of fossil fuel-based generation into a centre for low-carbon, flexible power. The new Open Cycle Gas Turbine plant will operate on 100% sustainable biofuels, specifically Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO), with the capacity to convert to hydrogen in the future, offering a lower-carbon alternative to traditional fuels. The project follows the closure of the original Tarbert Power Station in 2023 and represents a major step forward in the transformation of the site into a modern, sustainable energy facility aligned with Ireland’s long-term climate goals.
Full construction is expected to commence later in 2025, with completion planned for the end of 2027.
