The National Velodrome and Badminton Centre has received approval to proceed to tender from the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport, and Media, Catherine Martin TD, and Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education, and the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne TD. Approved by Fingal County Council in January 2023, this represents a significant milestone in the ambitious development of the Sport Ireland Campus in Dublin 15.
The development, which will stand 19.6 metres at its highest point, will feature two primary sporting areas: Ireland’s first indoor velodrome track (250m) and 12 badminton courts. The facility will also include essential amenities such as changing rooms, medical and emergency rooms, office spaces, and a strength and conditioning area.

The venue will accommodate around 1,000 permanent spectator seats, with the capacity to add an additional 2,500 temporary seats for events beyond cycling and badminton. Externally, the development will feature a surrounding plaza area, which will include a “cycling walk of fame.” Car, bicycle, and coach parking will be available on-site.
It had previously been reported that funding for this project had been included in the €165 billion National Development Plan. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2027.
Following the approval to proceed to tender, Sport Ireland CEO, Dr. Úna May, stated, “It’s exactly the sort of continued investment that is absolutely crucial for boosting participation from grassroots levels to elite athletes. We’re all enjoying the Olympics, and this will only enhance high-performing Irish athletes’ chances of international, Olympic and Paralympic medals in the future.”
Sport Ireland Campus Masterplan
The Sport Ireland Campus Masterplan envisions the construction of athlete accommodations, workplaces, cultural buildings, and major new sports facilities. These multiple developments will together establish a campus that can be an international centre for sporting excellence.
When announced, in 2022, then Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade, and Employment, Leo Varadkar, stated, “This new masterplan will enable Sport Ireland to further maximise the potential of the campus for community use with its vision to ensure the campus is a space for all ages and all abilities. This campus can serve as a wonderful community resource as well as a centre for national sporting excellence.”
