Mater Hospital Granted Permission for Rooftop Helipad

Dublin City Council has granted planning permission for the construction of a rooftop helipad at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH), in Dublin. The helipad will sit approximately 36 metres above ground level on the roof of the Rock Wing, inaugurated in 2023. The project is part of the continued improvements and expansion made to the hospital.

3D Design Bureau

3D Design Bureau was appointed to support this successful planning submission by producing aerial photomontages and verified view montages. These visualisations helped the local authority to assess potential visual impacts on the surrounding environment. This was not our first collaboration on the Mater Hospital, as we had previously provided verified view montages for the Rock Wing development.

Key works will include the construction of an access ramp from the helipad to the existing roof at Level 09, emergency escape stairs to Level 07, and a new rooftop access hatch above Level 06. Internal changes will convert an existing store room and staff room into a stairwell and corridor linking to the fire escape stairs towards Eccles Street.

The helipad, built on a structural metal frame and measuring 26.4 metres in diameter, will play a key role in the hospital’s new trauma centre. This is part of MMUH’s development as a major Trauma Centre under the National Trauma Strategy and the Central Trauma Network.

According to the design statement issued by STW Architects, the helipad is “estimated to save an additional 9 lives per year”.

The planning submission was supported by a suite of technical reports, including an EIA screening report, engineering documentation, and a noise assessment. The proposal received no third-party objections or requests for further information and was granted with the support of the local community.
