Site work begins on the construction of a 6-storey student accommodation complex on the site of the former St. Peter’s Bakery on Parnell Street. Planning was granted back in May 2019 and now works on site have finally begun.
Approved under fast-track planning, the student scheme will provide 276 student bed spaces within 249 student bedrooms. The development will be spread across 5 blocks, spanning in height from 4 to 6 storeys.
It will also feature indoor and outdoor communal and recreational facilities, including a coffee bar, a media zone, a games room, a gym, a laundry, and roof gardens.
The approved development will be constructed on the site of a former bakery complex, which is a protected structure dating to the early 20th century and was until recently occupied by a printing business and furniture warehouse. The bakery office building, a protected structure designed by Charles Herbert Ashworth and built by prolific Dublin builder CJ Crampton in about 1906, will now be renovated and incorporated into the development.
Construction of the accommodation is expected to be complete by August 2024 and should help to prevent the current student accommodation shortages from continuing in future years.
